Are we moving forward, or are we stepping back into the Ticket to Leave system of 1845? The UNC’s recent proposal for "closed communities" and strict curfews—requiring residents to get a permit just to enter or leave their own neighborhoods—sounds dangerously familiar. For anyone who knows our history, this isn’t a modern security strategy. It is a modern reincarnation of the colonial "Ticket to Leave" system.Under British colonial rule, indentured labourers in Trinidad and Tobago were legally confined to their assigned estates. If they wanted to step outside those boundaries for any reason, they were forced to carry a written pass—a Ticket to Leave. If they were caught without it? Arrest, criminal prosecution, and imprisonment. Fast forward to 2026, and we are being told that restriction of movement, heavy surveillance, and "passes to exit your community" are the solutions to our problems. Freedom of movement is a fundamental constitutional right, not a privilege to be rationed out by a permit system. We cannot secure our future by borrowing the chains of our past. Is this safety, or is this a return to the plantation playbook? -Suzette Louwe
