Proper hygiene helps remove sweat, dirt, bacteria and other contaminants from the body and can play an important role in infection prevention and overall well-being. When a person enters a healthcare environment, they should not have to surrender their right to feel clean, comfortable and human. This is especially important for older adults, people with disabilities, individuals recovering from illness, and those who cannot bathe or groom themselves independently. Personal grooming should be viewed as part of patient care—not a luxury or an optional service. Healthcare professionals work tirelessly to treat illness, administer medications and monitor medical conditions. But caring for the whole person also means recognizing the importance of cleanliness, dignity and personal appearance.
