@jesszafarris: Replying to @miser_catulle Washington Irving is the mind behind Gotham as a nickname for NYC (and Batman’s name), as well as knickerbockers, knickers and the Knicks. A few additional details and clarifying points: Bill Finger said Gotham first caught his eye in NYC in the name of a jeweler’s shop. Diedrich Knickerbocker’s name was borrowed from Irving’s friend Herman Knickerbocker. It means “toy marble-baker.” In German knicker was schoolboy slang for a marble, probably from the imitative verb knikken “to snap.” Illustrations in A History of New York depicted the Dutch settlers of what was then called New Amsterdam in loose trousers that buckled at the waist and knee. New Yorkers descended from these Dutch settlers metonymically became known as knickerbockers before the term was extended to other New Yorkers and then New York institutions.
