One thing that is almost part and parcel of MCAS is an incredible reactivity to medications. A “normal” starting dose may just be way too high in someone with overactive mast cells. So instead of starting where we typically do, I often start much lower and move up slowly. Sometimes that means breaking a pill into smaller pieces. If there’s a liquid version, that can be even easier because you can start with a tiny dose and inch your way up. And sometimes we’ll even compound a medication at a lower dose just to make that process possible. Reactions to medications are really common in MCAS, and starting with less can sometimes make a big difference. The hope is that your body gets used to the medication, you slowly build the dose over time, and eventually you’re able to get the benefit without getting knocked over by side effects right out of the gate. #mcas #heds #dysautonomia #mastcellactivationsyndrome #hypermobility
