@404.media: You might think of Proton as a company that really cares about your privacy and security. Turns out, according to sources within the company who spoke to 404 Media's Joseph Cox, that Proton's CEO Andy Yen is calling the company's employees "losers" for things like cautioning him to pentest an AI-coded project before going live and even setting up an email account for employees to use to report anything getting in their way of using AI. As the internal documents, audio leaks and even an AI-generated manifesto from the company read, the future of Proton is not one of engineers working to keep your data safe, but one of project managers that oversee and use AI to keep the company running. 404 Media spoke to eight current and one former Proton employees and reviewed Slack chats, meeting recordings, and an AI manifesto written by the company’s CTO. Our reporting reveals a culture of fear inside Proton, where many employees are hesitant to even mildly critique Yen’s views or discuss engineering problems. Workers describe an environment where employees have genuine concerns about security or being asked to develop security products with AI, but feel unable to voice them, lest Yen berates them in front of everyone or threatens their employment at the company. One employee told 404 Media, “Whatever persona Andy [Yen] has out of Proton, he’s a straight up bully inside. He routinely breaks his little facade in Slack and calls people losers and stupid, often for stuff he’s paying them for.” Link in bio to read our investigation now.

Use Tuta. They have a strict No AI policy. I saw the writing on the wall a while ago in regards to Proton and how they were more money driven.

I don't care if he's also a founder, this is grounds to remove him from leadership. Using code assistants is one thing, but refusing to allow time for proper testing is inexcusable.

This. Is. Everywhere. You should see the GitLab’s tectonic shift. AI psychosis is generalised across all c levels in the industry.

FFS - I've just gone through a migration from Google Workspace and Authenticator, Dropbox, and 1Password to Proton products to get it all to Europe and to be safer. And now this... 😭 I'm starting to think the safest approach is a local NAS and a physical notebook with all your passwords, and then just stop communicating altogether 😳

There are no other options. Everything else is broken. This was my last choice. 😑 Can’t ANYTHING be *not* evil?

As someone that works in IT security - everyone, from small to large - private to public companies has this thinking about AI now. We’ve been told to stand down since the gold rush started. It’s been awful.

And on the Proton subreddit, CEO Andy Yen responded to our article and how he told an employee it was “loser thinking” after the employee suggested testing an AI project for a few days before going live:

### What’s actually happening in the video? It’s a real (but rare) atmospheric phenomenon: a rotating vortex cloud (mesocyclone-like structure) formed by strong updrafts spinning moisture into a dramatic swirling shape. The intense, colorful glow comes from the city’s bright lights reflecting off the dense, moisture-laden cloud layers—no CGI, no aliens, no holograms. Similar events have occurred in urban areas with heavy light pollution and specific weather conditions (strong convection + low-level moisture). A previous Grok response in the thread (from late Feb/early March 2026 context) described it exactly that way: “That’s a rare rotating vortex cloud (mesocyclone-like) over Hong Kong’s skyline from late Feb 2026. Strong updrafts spun the moisture into that swirling vortex shape, while the city’s lights reflected off it to create the glowing pink/purple/green colors. Purely natural—no edits or anomalies!” ## Public reactions (from replies/quotes) The thread exploded with a classic mix of speculation: - Many called it Project Blue Beam (conspiracy theory about holographic fake skies/aliens for control). - Others said AI-generated or fake (
