So a lot of you are asking about the Florida report that found arsenic in candy. Quick thoughts as a pediatrician and a dad. They found arsenic in 28 of 46 candies. Sounds scary. But they didn't separate the inorganic arsenic (the kind we care about) from the organic kind (way less of a concern). It wasn't peer reviewed. And even Florida's own health department said the results weren't definitive. Arsenic is in soil and water, so it's in a lot of foods. Rice, juice, chicken, fish. Detecting it isn't the same as it being dangerous. Halloween already has enough real stuff to watch for. Choking hazards for little kids. Being visible in the dark. Cars. A few pieces of candy isn't where I'd spend my worry because of this report. If you don't do candy in your house, that's fine! Just make that call based on good evidence, not a report we honestly can't make much of. Tips to stay healthy this Halloween: 1. Make sure you are seen. Use reflective tape or glow sticks on costumes, and carry a flashlight 2. Make sure children are with an adult 3. Cross at corners and crosswalks, and don't dart between parked cars 4. Check candy at home before they dig in, and toss anything unwrapped or homemade from someone you don't know 5. Skip hard candy, gum, nuts, and popcorn for little ones under 4 6. Watch for food allergies and if you have allergies, carry an EpiPen 7. Drivers, slow down and watch for kids 8. Have fun, be safe, if you choose to eat candy do so in moderation #candy #arsenic #halloween
