I first saw Sir Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and through Star Trek: The Next Generation, I discovered a vision of the future that has stayed with me ever since. A future where greed, hunger and sickness were things of the past. Where humanity had grown beyond its obsession with wealth and power, and where we could focus on becoming better human beings, learning, discovering and exploring the universe around us. That vision had a profound influence on me. Picard’s curiosity, compassion, integrity and unwavering commitment to reason and understanding were qualities I admired and wanted to see more of in the world. Patrick Stewart brought those qualities to life in a way that made them feel real and worth striving for. I think many of us who grew up with Star Trek carry a little piece of that future with us. I certainly do. And looking at the world today, I find myself wishing we were a little closer to it. The values Picard stood for, and the causes Patrick Stewart championed throughout his life, feel more important than ever. I’m grateful to him for helping shape the way I look at the world, and for giving us something to believe in and work towards. Thank you, Sir Patrick. You will be missed. 🖖
