The strigoi is folklore. But the belief in the strigoi is very real. In 2004—not 1804—a group of men in Marotinu de Sus, Dolj, opened the grave of Petre Toma after relatives became convinced he had returned as a strigoi. They removed his heart, burned it, and used the ashes as part of the ritual intended to stop him. The police became involved. The six so-called “vânători de strigoi” were eventually conv1cted for d3s3crating the grave and received suspended pr1son sentences. And years later, journalists returning to the area still found people openly describing belief in strigoi and the rituals traditionally used against them. Folklore doesn’t necessarily mean something people stopped believing centuries ago. Disclaimer: this is just describing folklore and depicting an incident.
