Many of our favourite “Gen Z” terms are actually terms from African American Vernacular English or AAVE. AAVE was created admist harsh conditions of oppression against the Black community in the US, creating English based creole languages. But when framed as mere internet slang terms, we become disconnected from its roots in resilience, and struggle. This is similar to Karl Marx’s concept of commodity fetishim in which consumers are hidden from the social relations that create commodities today. When Black culture is erased as a creator of Gen Z slang, it’s easier to steal and commodify it for profit and attention. And ironically then, Black people still are scrutinized for speaking it although they are the creators, but everyone else is seen as “trendy”. AAVE was never a “trend” and although many of the terms are deeply embedded into our vernacular today, take the time to still recognize its origins. This of course, I am not a linguist or expert, this is just my own opinion and observation, so feel free to challenge it or share your own thoughts!! #aave #culturalappropriation #linguistics #marxism #blackculture
