@viralsanctuarysports: The Impossible Has Happened: Kirk Gibson, Two Bad Legs, One Swing October 15, 1988, Game 1 of the World Series. Kirk Gibson was not even in the lineup, hurt in both legs, when Tommy Lasorda sent him up with two outs in the ninth and the Dodgers down 4-3 to Oakland. Gibson remembered scout Mel Didier's report: on 3-2, Dennis Eckersley throws a backdoor slider. He got it, and Vin Scully gave us the line every fan knows. Our take: this is still the swing every October is measured against, because the man could barely walk to the plate. It was his only at-bat of the series, and the Dodgers won it in five.
