In 2004, political analyst and economist Dr. Claud Anderson proposed a Black-owned business and economic enclave in Detroit, Michigan, often referred to as "Blacktown". Despite Detroit being a majority-Black city, the plan faced intense backlash and was ultimately blocked. Double Standards in Ethnic Enclaves Dr. Anderson and his supporters heavily criticized the "racist" label as a hypocritical double standard. They pointed out that Detroit openly celebrated and promoted other race- and nationality-based commercial districts, including: • Greektown • Mexicantown • Chinatown / Asian Town • Corktown (Irish) • Poletown (Polish) Supporters argued that while economic unity and cultural branding were celebrated for European, Hispanic, and Asian communities, the same strategy was weaponized as "racist" only when Black Americans attempted to build vertical economic integration. #black #detroit #america
