@the.lost.mechanism: How do you swing a bridge full of canal without spilling it? Barton Swing Aqueduct carries the Bridgewater Canal over the Manchester Ship Canal. Gates seal both ends, a rubber-faced wedge lifts out, and about 800 tonnes of water swing with the trough. Designed by Edward Leader Williams; opened 1894. Grade II* listed.
