An 18-month-old Arizona boy was discovered alive inside a hospital morgue nearly six hours after he had been pronounced dead following a near-drowning incident, according to a report by NBC News. The incident is now being reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office as investigators work to determine exactly what occurred between the time he was declared dead and when he was found breathing. Authorities said the ordeal began around 5:38 p.m. on February 8 after Vincent Lorenzo Fiordilino was found face down in his family’s backyard pool. A family member immediately began CPR before paramedics transported him to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center. Emergency room staff, led by physician A. Toosi, attempted to resuscitate the toddler. Police records indicate that shortly before speaking with the boy’s parents, Toosi was seen checking a cellphone. At approximately 6:20 p.m., he announced the official time of death after asking if anyone objected and requesting a moment of silence. According to witnesses, both Vincent’s parents and officers at the hospital noticed the child appeared to continue gasping after he had been declared dead. When an officer questioned whether the boy might still be alive, Toosi reportedly insisted he was qualified to make the determination and asked to continue doing his job. Roughly an hour later, a detective reported hearing another gasp while hospital staff prepared to move Vincent into the hospital’s refrigerated morgue. When the detective returned later to photograph the body, he said he heard a similar sound again. A nurse reportedly explained the noises as agonal respirations or trapped air escaping after CPR efforts. The child was placed inside the hospital’s cold room, where the door remained closed until just before midnight. When medical examiner personnel arrived around 11:52 p.m. to collect the body, they discovered Vincent was still breathing. His parents were immediately notified, and he was rushed by helicopter to Phoenix Children’s Hospital. He has since been discharged from the hospital. Gilbert police have recommended child abuse charges against the boy’s parents, although prosecutors had not filed charges at the time of the report. Investigators allege the parents may not have realized Vincent had wandered into the pool because they were impaired. Both parents reportedly acknowledged smoking marijuana earlier that day. Mercy Gilbert Medical Center said it launched an internal investigation into the incident but has not publicly released its findings or confirmed whether Dr. Toosi is still employed there. Requests for comment from Toosi’s attorney were not returned. According to the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the United States. Survivors of nonfatal drowning incidents can still experience serious complications, including permanent brain injuries. A fundraiser created for Vincent’s family states he remains on a ventilator and has so far avoided significant brain damage, though doctors expect he will need continued treatment, therapy, and long-term medical monitoring.#fyp #viral
