Nuclear fusion is the process where light atomic nuclei combine to form heavier ones, releasing a gargantuan amount of energy. This very reaction is what powers the Sun and all other stars. Deep inside a star, extreme gravity and temperatures of millions of degrees force hydrogen nuclei to overcome their natural repulsion and fuse into helium. The mass of the resulting helium is slightly less than the combined mass of the original particles, and this lost mass is converted into pure radiative energy according to Einstein's formula, E=mc². As massive stars age, their cores heat up even more, triggering the synthesis of progressively heavier elements all the way up to iron. Unlike traditional nuclear power, which relies on splitting heavy uranium atoms (fission), fusion works in reverse, is environmentally friendly, and leaves behind no long-lived radioactive waste. While humanity has harnessed this process for destruction in the form of the hydrogen bomb, building a peaceful, controlled fusion reactor remains one of the greatest scientific challenges in history. Because Earth lacks the immense gravity of a star, scientists must heat plasma to a staggering 100 to 150 million degrees Celsius — ten times hotter than the core of the Sun — and confine it using powerful magnetic fields in specialized machines called tokamaks and stellarators. Success in this field, which is currently being tested through the massive international ITER project, would grant humanity a virtually limitless, safe, and clean source of energy powered by hydrogen isotopes extracted from ordinary water. #edit #sciencetok #physicstok #fact
