Taking the Train from Gastonia to Charlotte Did you know you can take a train from Gastonia to Charlotte? Good news: You can. Bad news: It leaves at 4:00 AM! Gastonia has an Amtrak station at 350 Hancock Street, served by the Crescent, which travels between New York City and New Orleans. The station is unstaffed, so don't expect to find anyone available to provide information or assistance, especially at 4:00 in the morning. My Trip I thought I would be alone, but there were about a half-dozen other riders waiting for the train. The train was scheduled to depart Gastonia at 4:04 AM but didn't arrive until 4:15 AM. Interestingly, although the scheduled arrival in Charlotte was 5:06 AM, the trip took only 25 minutes. I arrived at 4:40 AM! My ticket cost $14, although fares can be slightly cheaper when purchased farther in advance. The train was comfortable, and I enjoyed the ride, but I can't describe much about the journey. The cars were dark, with sleeping passengers making longer trips than me. Also, there wasn't much to see out the window before sunrise. Once I arrived at the Amtrak station, I was about two miles northeast of Uptown Charlotte. I didn't want to walk in the dark, but there is another transportation option. Charlotte's Route 11 bus stops across from the Amtrak station and can take passengers to the Charlotte Transportation Center, across from the Spectrum Center. I walked around Charlotte in the early morning, having coffee, breakfast, and doing some early sightseeing. For my return trip to Gastonia, I took the 9:15 AM Sunway bus from Charlotte's Greyhound station. Could This Be a Commuting Option? Here's what struck me about the experience. Taking the train between Gastonia and Charlotte could be a game changer for people who commute along I-85. The train is comfortable, affordable, and avoids the stress of driving. But there's one big problem: the schedule. Gastonia currently has just two Amtrak stops each day, one in each direction, both during the overnight or early-morning hours. There's only one daily train toward Charlotte, departing around 4 AM. That's simply not practical for most commuters. Imagine if we had more frequent train service between Gastonia and Charlotte, with departures during normal commuting hours. It could give residents another transportation option, reduce the number of cars traveling on I-85, and make Gastonia an even more attractive place to live. What Do You Think? Would you consider commuting between Gastonia and Charlotte by train if convenient service were available? Let me know in the comments!
