@andymolinsky: Ever wonder why some people think New Yorkers are "rude" while others just think they’re passionate? Deborah Tannen’s famous 1978 Thanksgiving study proves that what feels like an annoying interruption to a Californian is actually just an "auditory nod" of deep connection to a New Yorker. It’s not rudeness; it’s a total clash of conversational styles! Watch until the end to see which communication style you secretly use. #Sociolinguistics #ConversationalStyle #CommunicationTips #NewYorkVsCalifornians #PsychologyFacts
i grew up in NJ and trying to have a conversation in the midwest is like half speed

This is why talking to east coasters and specifically tri state people is just more fun. you can criss cross 30 topics in 10 mins smoothly and everyone is contributing and keeping up

Lived in NY my whole life. I moved south and people think I’m rude. I think I’m contributing to the conversation and people think I’m interrupting. It makes sense why it’s been really hard to make friends here. 🤣

This explains sooo much! I'm a native Californian with ADHD, and I get on extremely well with people from the Northeast. My brain is wired to speak fast, change topics often, and interject 😂

not from NY but i’m neurodivergent and teach autistic kids about pragmatics and i find that the cooperative overlap style also works better for neurodivergent people! less stress about interrupting

My midwestern husband used to accuse me of interrupting people. I said “I’m not interrupting them, they can keep talking!” It took him a few holidays with my family to figure out the rhythm.

What’s hilarious is my mom lived in NY most of her life, then moved to the TX 10 yrs ago and when I talk to her she likes to remind me to slow down. I don’t feel like I’m speaking at a fast speed just too much for her to process, so I think it’s more of a direct correlation to pace of life. If you have to process and give information faster, that’s going to look fast to someone who processes and gives information slower, and vice versa.

My ex from Oregon HATED the way I conversed. I had to learn to sit in silence listening to drawn out stories that I had already guessed the end to several sentences ago

it's also gendered. women tend to do more overlapping (reacting, asking for more details), and men perceive the same style as interrupting. men monologue for a while and then it's someone else's turn.
