Historic Pendleton-Graves House, located in Sparta, Georgia. The property has underwent multiple transformations over the last two centuries: ⏳ Historical Timeline • Construction (c. 1815–1820): The home was originally built by Thomas Whaley as a simpler, Federal-style "Plantation Plain" or I-house structure sitting on a high basement. • The Pendleton Era (1853): The property was purchased by Dr. Edmund Monroe Pendleton, a local physician, professor, and agricultural scientist. He expanded the house significantly to accommodate his large family of 11 children. Dr. Pendleton is notable for pioneering the "Pendleton Formula," becoming one of the first entrepreneurs to successfully use cottonseed and animal matter to manufacture commercial fertilizer. • The Graves Era & Victorian Transformation (1880): Wealthy merchant and banker Richard Augustus Graves bought the house. He extensively remodeled the building, adding the Queen Anne Victorian embellishments seen today, including the distinct octagonal roof spires, a massive one-story wraparound veranda with decorative brackets, a geometric railing, and a projecting entrance pediment. Graves established Sparta's first commercial bank in 1887 and lived in the house until his death in 1901. • Restoration Attempts & Abandonment (1989–Present): After remaining in the Graves family for over a century, the house was sold in 1983. Following years of neglect, a preservationist named Nancy Stephens bought it out of estate/tax delinquency in 1989. She cleared out overgrowth and wildlife, repaired the roof, and repainted the exterior. She sold it in 1993, after which the property passed through multiple hands. The building remains a highly recognized, albeit heavily dilapidated, landmark of 19th-century architecture in Georgia. #History #historia #historical #HiddenHistory #historylovers
