I tried having one of those check-ins with my wife today. You know, some of the questions you recommended. The first question: "How connected do you feel to me lately?" Her answer- "I don't really think about it." Ouch, but okay, fair. Then we talked about chores. Then I asked her, "What are two ways I can help you feel loved and prioritized this week?" She got defensive and didn't give me an answer. There was a pause, and I said, "You know, these questions work best when they're mutual. Would you like to know 2 ways you can help me feel loved and prioritized this week?" She said she's really busy today. That was where the conversation ended.

I told him gently that I didnt feel safe being open with my emotions because he would be so reactive and angry instead of just listening. He took this as I was saying that I didnt feel safe because he was abusive, and he wouldn't hear me try to tell him what I was really saying. He just screamed "get out". So calmy I just said, ok. I do love him but I didnt feel safe to talk to him about important things
