𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗜 𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗡𝗘𝗗 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗧𝗢 𝗟𝗢𝗩𝗘 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘 𝗔𝗚𝗔𝗜𝗡. After losing my son Jake, I spent a year blaming myself for his death. I believed I hadn't been enough for him to choose to stay. I judged myself, blamed myself and hated myself more than anyone else ever could. But eventually I realised something: 𝗜 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝘆𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳. For a long time I didn't want to live anymore. I even found myself envying people approaching death, not because I wished suffering on anyone, but because I thought death meant peace. Then I began asking myself: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻? Why can't we create a little of it here on Earth? I no longer wanted to live for myself. So I chose to stay for those who loved me, and for people I'd never met who might one day feel the same darkness. But 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵. I needed to enjoy being alive again. I chose purpose. I chose to stop letting my past, my thoughts and other people's opinions dictate who I would become. 𝗜 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗱𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗻 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗲. Not a perfect human being. Just one willing to take accountability for my actions and behaviour. Self-awareness means recognising manipulation, coercion and controlling behaviour in others, while accepting we're capable of hurting people ourselves. I don't want to point out everyone else's faults while ignoring my own. The person I've been trying to become was always there. 𝗜 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝘆𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳. I cannot change what happened to Jake. But I can choose what I do with the life I still have. Thank you, Jake, for 15 beautiful years. You're still teaching me about love, life and humanity. I'll keep learning how we can be better humans, 𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗠𝗬𝗦𝗘𝗟𝗙. 𝗪𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲. 𝗪𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘄𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲.
