New Jersey, USA — A 54-year-old Jamaican man and U.S. permanent resident is facing federal charges after allegedly voting in the 2022 general election despite not being an American citizen. Antonio Mitchell, who lives in Paterson, allegedly registered to vote in September 2012 after falsely declaring that he was a U.S. citizen, according to federal court documents. Investigators say he voted in person on November 8, 2022, in an election that included candidates for the House of Representatives. In January 2025, Mitchell applied for American citizenship but reportedly answered "No" when asked whether he had ever registered to vote or voted in any U.S. election. Prosecutors also allege that he denied voting during immigration interviews in September 2025 and March 2026. He was arrested on October 28, 2026, and charged with voting as a noncitizen in a federal election, attempting to unlawfully obtain citizenship, and making false statements during the naturalization process. Mitchell reportedly posted $25,000 bond. ICE Assistant Director of Public Affairs Micah Bock said: “Voting in American elections is a right reserved for eligible voters. Those who knowingly violate federal election laws should understand that their actions carry serious consequences. “ICE cannot ignore suspected federal crimes simply because they involve elections. The law applies to everyone, and we intend to enforce it.” The case was announced during the November 3 midterm elections. Important: These are allegations, not a conviction. Mitchell is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. #NewJersey #Paterson #Jamaica #AntonioMitchell #japd
