Just taught this in 2nd grade. He ran over 100 miles to Sparta to ask for help fighting Persia, 100 miles back and 26 miles to marathon to say no help was coming, then 26 more miles to say they won. That’s when he finally died.

It was originally 25 miles, but during the 1908 Olympics in London it became 26.2 because they wanted to start at the Olympic stadium and finish at Windsor castle.

Just a little fun fact! The 26.2 mile distance actually comes from the 1908 London Olympics, when the route was extended to finish in front of the royal box at White City Stadium. The original Greek story inspired the marathon, but not the exact distance! 😊

The reason Pheidippides died after he ran was because he ran from Athens to Sparta to request military aid and back, 150 miles both ways. And then almost immediately after ran to marathon
