@hiddenhistoryvaultusa: The General His Own Soldiers Called a Traitor — History Still Debates It General Mark Clark commanded the Allied forces at Anzio and Monte Cassino in 1944. His decision on June 4th, 1944 — to turn his forces toward Rome rather than cut off the retreating German Tenth Army — remains one of the most criticized command decisions of the Italian Campaign. Military historians estimate the German army that escaped went on to cause tens of thousands of additional Allied casualties in subsequent fighting. Clark wanted Rome. He got it. Two days later D-Day began and Rome's capture disappeared from every newspaper front page. Veterans from Anzio never forgave him. The debate among historians continues today. Eisenhower's biggest mistake was putting Clark in charge instead of Patton.

Who would not want to be listed as the conqueror of the City of Rome? To be counted in the ranks of Belisarius and not Hanibal?

easy to be an armchair quarterback general...for example people still talk about General Meade at Gettysburg, if he had pursued Lee afterwards the war could have ended right then but the Union troops were exhausted....same aspect applied to General Mark, Anzio was a hard fought battle and US troops were exhausted as well...just saying

A lot of command decisions cost a lot of lives. The amount of casualties in bombers was staggering.
