@itsjillianrowe: Two things can be true at the same time. And the history of women’s suffrage is a spectacular example. 🫠 Frederick Douglass was an outspoken supporter of women’s voting rights. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton were prominent advocates for equality. But when the 15th Amendment proposed protecting Black men’s voting rights without extending those protections to women, their alliance started falling apart. And some of the arguments that followed were spectacularly racist. Because apparently fighting for equality didn’t always mean believing EVERYBODY deserved it. Today on Fuck Ass History: Abolitionists vs. Suffragists. We’re talking about Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the political alliances that fractured their movement, and the Black women who were getting left out of the conversation entirely. Because we can recognize someone’s extraordinary accomplishments AND acknowledge the deeply fucked-up things they did along the way. History doesn’t require flawless heroes. It requires facts. #FuckAssHistory #WomensSuffrage #FrederickDouglass #BlackHistory #HistoryTok
I'm not gonna lie, my response to hearing that story was f-- you, Fred. Let's face it, it took another fifty years because everyone wasn't included for white women and longer for everyone else. Then my little bitter middle child brain thought mean thoughts in the same way when they skipped Clinton for Obama in 08. I didn't think Obama had enough government experience to be president yet. I was wrong, he was fantastic. I will admit my lizard brain would have also drug my mouth straight to hell if I'd have been in that room. I would have been mean and low and racist even if I didn't really mean it. It's also one of the reasons I will say forever that wyt women don't have a debt to the civil rights movement. They thew us to the wolves when it was convenient to bring more men along. It still happens. Do I support other people's rights? Or course! I'm not a terrible person. I'm just also bitter and I know they'll step on and over women if it will get them what they want. I watched gay men do it when I told them Pence would get Roe over turned. They were upset about Bernie, so they went with Trump. Never mind women will die, we didn't get what we wanted, so screw America. They will also step on us. "They" is men in general. Doesn't matter if the women campaigned for your rights for years, (Frederick Douglas), lost friends, split their families etc. The men will abandon us when it suits them.

Jamie Michelle :
I absolutely love your content. I tend to think of myself as pretty well educated but there are times like this where you take two subjects in educated on to an extent, reframe them and open up an entire new world of thought. Thank you so much for this series💙

And even after that, black men and women didnt fully get the right to vote until the voting rights act was passed. it took native american men and women 4 years after the 19th amendment for them to get the right to vote (with the same asterisks that black men and women had)
