For 40 YEARS, the U.S. government allowed Black men with syphilis to go untreated, even after an effective treatment became available. Let that sink in. In 1932, the U.S. Public Health Service enrolled 600 Black men in a study in Tuskegee, Alabama. Of those, 399 had syphilis. The men were misled about the purpose of the study and never provided informed consent. By 1947, penicillin was the standard treatment for syphilis. Researchers knew this, yet continued withholding treatment to observe the disease’s progression. The study didn’t end until 1972. 40 years. Real people. Real suffering. In 1997, the U.S. government formally apologized. As a nurse practitioner, I believe we have a responsibility to acknowledge the darker chapters of medical history. This is why informed consent, medical transparency, and accountability matter. And this is only ONE of many documented cases of unethical medical research.
