Did you know that the name comes from Ancient Greek Θεσσαλονίκη (Thessaloníkē), a compound of Θεσσαλός / Θεσσαλία (Thessalos / Thessalia, “Thessalian / Thessaly”) and νίκη (níkē, “victory”).
The city was named after Thessalonike of Macedon, half-sister of Alexander the Great and wife of Cassander, who founded the city in 315 BCE. Her own name commemorated a Macedonian victory over the Thessalians: Thessalo- + -nikē, “Thessalian victory” or more naturally “victory over/in Thessaly.”
