If you’re bendy and anxious, those two things might be way more connected than anyone ever told you. People with hypermobile joints are a lot more likely to deal with anxiety and panic. And scientists are starting to figure out why. It’s physical. That same loose connective tissue that makes your joints so flexible is also wrapped around your blood vessels and your nerves. So your blood vessels struggle to push blood back up, your heart speeds up to keep up, and you feel dizzy and wired for no reason you can point to. Your nerves carry all of that up to your brain louder and messier too. And brain scans show the threat center in hypermobile people is actually bigger and more reactive. So it takes all that noise coming from your body and calls it fear. Basically, your panic might not be starting in your head. It might be starting in your body. I’m not a doctor, and this is still a young idea built on small studies. Therapy still helps a lot of people. But if “just calm down” never worked for you, that was never your fault. You can’t think your way out of a body. Sources: Eccles JA, et al. “Brain structure and joint hypermobility: relevance to the expression of psychiatric symptoms.” Br J Psychiatry. 2012.
