This one was hard to film. 💔💜 As an epileptologist, I know how devastating SUDEP is. And reading about what happened to Bowen Wan absolutely broke my heart. I’ve spent years caring for people with epilepsy, having difficult conversations about seizure risks and helping patients navigate treatment decisions that can profoundly affect their lives. And one thing I’ve learned is that patients rarely come to us with simple, textbook problems. They come with fears about medication side effects. Financial pressures. Competing responsibilities. Questions about whether the treatment helping one part of their life might be making another part harder. Those concerns are legitimate. They deserve to be heard, investigated and addressed. And that’s what makes this case so troubling. We are entering an era where medical information is more accessible than ever before. But accessibility creates an enormous responsibility for the systems delivering that information. There is a fundamental difference between helping someone understand their treatment options and directing them through a potentially dangerous medical decision. A confident answer is not necessarily a safe answer. And sometimes the most important thing a medical professional can do is recognize uncertainty, understand the risks and know when NOT to recommend something. I am not against artificial intelligence in healthcare. I believe it has tremendous potential to improve education, access and even clinical care when used responsibly. But I am deeply concerned about what happens when people mistake a system’s ability to generate convincing answers for the ability to exercise sound clinical judgment. Patients deserve better than false certainty. They deserve to have their concerns taken seriously without being placed at unnecessary risk. And when technology enters the space between patients and their medical care, patient safety must come before everything else. My heart goes out to Bowen’s family. I hope her story leads to meaningful conversations about accountability, safeguards and the responsibility that comes with providing medical information to vulnerable people. 💜💖 Legal disclaimer: This video discusses allegations made in a pending wrongful death lawsuit against OpenAI. These allegations have not been established in court and causation has not been proven. #epilepsyawareness #SUDEP #patientsafety #neurology #medicalai
