Somehow we’ve become so used to delayed trains, broken infrastructure, cash payments, paperwork, and inefficient public services that when a country gets these basics right, we call it “the future.” The future isn’t digital payments or high-speed rail. It’s the present. While China is getting all those things right and more, we are stuck with fighting each other over petty topics. That’s what the present is supposed to look like - clean cities, efficient public transport, systems are work for the people. After travelling through China, I realised that what people call “living in 2050” is just the result of decades of investment in infrastructure and public services. Whether you agree with China’s political system or not, it’s hard not to notice what can happen when development becomes a national priority. Maybe China isn’t ahead of everyone else.
